I have an older laptop that I am have installed Ubuntu Server on for the purpose of testing out a few things from my Linux Mint PC's. However, it uses the Agere ET-131x ethernet controller and when installing the server, it did not detect the network interface and therefore does not install any kind of driver for it, which leaves me in a catch 22 as I cannot connect to the internet from the server computer to update or install anything to get the ethernet port working. Ubuntu Server sees it, just not driving it.
I found a driver for it on Sourceforge but when I downloaded it and extracted it to a USB drive and then mounted that in the Ubuntu Server computer, I could not run make, make file or nothing.

So is there anyway I can get a ready to install driver over to that PC? I looked for a .deb package but cannot find anything. Im not sure what needs to be done and would appreciate any assistance. I would have thought that the driver would have been installed automatically, but since it hasnt, it leaves me in a corner Im not sure how to get out of, LOL.
